In 1846 John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill

 

on the same day adventurous people started going to Sutter's Mill lo look for gold they was called the "fourty-niners"

 

Mosto of them did not get rich but the cleverest peolple opened banks, eating places, hotels and shops that sold goods to the Fourty-niners, and they became rich quickly: 

A German immigrant Levi Strauss started making strong blue trousers and were immediately successful.

Saloons and gambling hall opened in Barbary Coast, a dengerous neigbohrood known for his crime, outlaws and gambling.
